Inspiration:
I went back to Fink's Circle of Slaughter and kind of reminisced on the fun I had and then I thought about how that fun could keep coming back. I thought about Moxxi's Underdome in Borderlands 1 and the elements of that I enjoyed. I thought about how boring I have found all the raid bosses to be so far and how things could be shaken up a bit. The following is what I came up with.
Introducing, The Raiddome!
Concept:
This could easily be Moxxi's Underdome 2.0. The idea is players come to this Raiddome, to take part in round based combat with the end goal being to reach the end of the raid and gain access to the innermost section of the Winner's Circle(I will explain this later).
What is a round?
Just like in the Underdome, the Raiddome would have rounds comprised of 5 waves. As for how many rounds, I think an option between 3, 5, and 7 rounds would be great. I wouldn't want to have those modifiers though (Like the Zero Grav, or Vampire). I just want the themed rounds. Like a Rabid round, a Goliath round, a Midget round, a Pirate round, a Rat round, a Hyperion round, etc.
Where would this happen?
Considering we don't have a jungle themed location yet, I was thinking the Raiddome itself could be in a jungle like world. In the Raiddome players would be able to select different combat zones to fight in. These combat zones should cover all kinds of landscapes. From the Arid Nexus, to the Highlands, to the Southern Shelf.
Who would we be fighting?
Just like in the Underdome, the Raiddome would throw enemies at the player from the game. Wave 5 of each round, the Raiddome would throw a mini boss from the game at the player along with some minions to get you up if you get downed(Just like the Underdome). The thing is though, there's also a possibility to see special enemies that players will not see anywhere else. Like a really tough Drifter, or a Rakk Hive. The enemies you defeat should drop items and as you progress further the drops should get better. Also, these mini bosses should be able to drop weapons from their loot tables. So if you end up fighting Saturn, he could drop The Hive! The other thing with this is it could really help with some of the mini bosses people are having a lot of trouble finding. Like Pimon and Tumbaa.
Themed Raids?
What I mean by this is raids that put a constraint on the player for the whole raid. For example, things like a Fire Only raid, or a 1 Weapon/2 Weapons/3 Weapons Only raid, or a 'insert weapon type here' Only raid, etc. Of course, there's always the option of a regular raid, but these provide variety and I think that the rewards at the end of the raid should be different for each type of raid you attempt. By that I mean, you have a better chance of getting a certain reward for completing a certain type of raid.
What's this Winner's Circle?
At the end of the raid(Win or lose), all players would be taken to the Winner's Circle. This Winner's Circle is a special circular room filled with chests. The chests at the centre of the room have a higher chance of dropping the better loot(They are also the only chests that could contain the raid specific rewards). Depending on how far they made it in the raid, players would be able to travel closer to the centre of the circle. Of course, the only way to get to the centre is by completing a 7 round raid(3 and 5 rounds are more of a casual thing). By doing this, not making all the way wouldn't be a total waste. You'd still have a chance of getting something out of it.
The Wager Match?
Last thing, I was thinking about a Wager Match raid that allows players to put pieces of their own gear on the line and based on their total amount of points gained throughout the raid, placement would be determined (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th). The Wager Match raid would still give the players access to the Winner's Circle at the end of the raid. The points would be gained through just about all kinds of actions such as doing damage, picking up downed players, slagging for others, and, of course, making kills. I have no idea on how to gauge point allocation, so I'm asking for your help here. The 1st place player would get first pick at the gear put up, 2nd place second pick, etc. I think that this should work like trading where the highest amount of gear each player can put into one Wager Match raid is 4. All players need to match on amount of gear put in though. So if they agree on 2 pieces of gear EVERYONE puts in 2. That way when it comes time to choose, the 1st place player would pick two pieces of gear back to back. Then the 2nd place player would pick his/her two. And so on. If it's 4 pieces of gear each player put in, then 1st place would pick four pieces of gear. Then 2nd place would pick four pieces of gear. And so on.
Anyways, that's it. Thanks for reading and if you have any suggestions or questions, please post them.
